JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI – PLS 3rd Learning is proud to announce that Executive Vice President Steve Barkley was presented with a proclamation from the city of Jackson, Mississippi at Millsaps College on Tuesday.
Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber presented the honor to Barkley in recognition of his 10 years of service as a presenter at the Millsaps College Principals’ Institute. The institute, which is housed in the Education Department at Millsaps College, has been “committed to the personal and professional growth of principals as educational leaders in order to improve the quality of education” since 1993.
The proclamation came as a complete shock to Barkley. “I think for the first time in my life I am actually speechless,” Barkley said. “I couldn’t be more grateful to Millsaps College and the city of Jackson for humbling me with such an honor.”
Barkley’s professional development presentations have been held in high regard by many educators, most notably Dr. Ledora Harris, assistant professor at Millsaps College and director of the Millsaps College Principals’ and Teachers’ Institute. “Mr. Barkley’s presentations have helped school principals understand and apply effective leadership skills,” Harris explained. “We have been very privileged to have him speak at our Principals’ Summer Institute. His presentations have been invaluable to the development of our school leaders.”
Barkley visited the Institute earlier this week to present his latest workshop, “Planning with the End in Mind and Responding to Resistance,” a skill-based presentation addressing conflict resolution in education. For more information on Mr. Barkley’s work and availability, visit BarkleyPD.com.

About Millsaps College Principals’ Institute:
The Millsaps College Principals’ Institute began because of the vision of a group of Mississippi principals who attended the Harvard Principals’ Summer Institute. They wanted a similar experience available for principals closer to home. Dr. Jeanne Middleton-Hairston, professor in the Department of Education at Millsaps, explored funding possibilities and in November 1992 the Institute was awarded charter grants from BellSouth Foundation, Mississippi Power Education Foundation, and The Phil Hardin Foundation. The first Summer Institute was held in July 1993.
